Question for Quote Investigator: A group that acts in unison can cause enormous positive or negative changes. Each member of a group typically celebrates favorable developments but disavows adverse events. Here are three versions of a pertinent metaphorical adage:
(1) No single raindrop believes it is to blame for the flood.
(2) A single raindrop never feels responsible for the flood.
(3) No individual raindrop ever considers itself responsible for the flood.
This saying has been attributed to English writer John Ruskin, English humorist Douglas Adams, and U.S. journalist Sydney J. Harris. Would you please explore this topic?
Reply from Quote Investigator: The earliest match found by QI appeared in the syndicated newspaper column of Sydney J. Harris in 1977. The article consisted of a series of miscellaneous thoughts such as these three items:1
One of the dozen most frequently misspelled words (even in learned works) is “minuscule,” usually spelled “miniscule.”
No individual raindrop ever considers itself to be responsible for the flood.
What science smugly calls “natural laws” are really only partial observations: No doubt the house fly thinks of the swatter as a natural law.
Based on this citation, Sydney J. Harris is the leading candidate for creator of this saying; however, the central idea appeared more than a decade earlier embodied in a different metaphorical framework.
In September 1963 “Holiday” magazine of Pennsylvania printed a collection of sayings from the Polish satirist Stanisław Jerzy Lec. The sayings had been translated by Jacek M. Galazka. This item was included:2

In 1979 the medical journal “Clinics in Plastic Surgery” published an article which used the raindrop saying as an epigraph while crediting Harris:3

In 1980 E. C. McKenzie published the compilation “Mac’s Giant Book of Quips & Quotes” which contained the following item. No author was specified, and the word “responsible” as misspelled:4

In 1991 “Forbes” printed the following on its recurring page titled “Thoughts on the Business of Life”:5

In 1992 Ross Erickson posted a message to the Usenet newsgroup comp.sys.ibm.pc.games which contained the following instance in its signature block:6
“No individual raindrop considers itself responsible for the flood.”
In 1992 “The Painted One” posted a message to the Usenet newsgroup uk.people.gothic which contained the following variant in its signature block:7
No single raindrop believes it is to blame for the flood
In 2003 columnist Larry Caplan of the “Evansville Courier and Press” in Evansville, Indiana employed another variant:8
Now, I might be tempted to say, “Hey, I’m just one person! I’ve got only a small amount of chemical in this bottle. How much harm am I, as an individual, really doing?” Well, there’s an old saying that answers that: “No single raindrop ever believes it’s responsible for the flood.”
In 2004 the “Springville Herald” of Springville, Utah printed two filler items. The first was a quotation attributed to John Ruskin. The second was an instance of the saying under examination. It is possible that an inattentive person attached Ruskin’s name to the second quotation:9

In 2016 a post on a subreddit dedicated to quotations contained an instance of the saying attributed to John Ruskin:10

In 2018 the book “Fostering Sustainability by Management Education” contained a passage from an unnamed student which included an anonymous instance of the saying:11
My decisions affect myself, others around me, my environment, and even society to a small degree. One of the best quotes I ever heard was, “A single raindrop never feels responsible for the flood,” and it perfectly captures the selfish mindset of an individual.
In August 2018 an article in the “Star Tribune” of Minneapolis, Minnesota attributed the saying to a well-known author of humorous science fiction:12
“The single raindrop never feels responsible for the flood,” wrote Douglas Adams. Our neighbors just texted us a photo of our Weber grill, which became airborne Friday evening, winding up in their window well.
In 2026 “The Gazette” of Montreal, Canada printed the following:13
QUOTE OF THE DAY.
No individual rain drop ever considers itself responsible for the flood. JOHN RUSKIN
In conclusion, based on current evidence, Sydney J. Harris crafted this saying and published it in 1977. A similar saying based on a snowflake instead of a raindrop appeared in 1963. QI has found no substantive support for the attribution to John Ruskin or Douglas Adams.
